I remember really liking all of this when I first played this game all those many years ago. The Sanderson family just got the ultimate in high-tech, house-helper technology: Chibi-Robo. Ghost hunting is a very lightly touched genre in gaming and surprisingly it's a perfect fit for Luigi's cowardly, but reluctantly persevering persona as he desperately fights not only the many ghosts in the mansion, but his own fear to save his older brother. The complications and cleverness of the game … Nintendo has a long running tradition when it comes to launch titles. I have beat this game at least 7 times and it just seems to never get old. I would give this game a spin if your interested. The Gamecube is the weird middle child between the Nintendo 64 and the Wii that didn’t sell nearly as well in spite of the fact it was adorable and small and you could carry it places like a small cube briefcase. When you’re talking about a Miyamoto launch title, "pretty good" just won’t cut it. The flagship title on their brand new system featured Luigi. Before going into this game, you should be aware that this is one with multiple flaws and it doesn’t have that same timeless appeal as any of the older Mario games. When one of them goes “jeez I hope this tub of water I’m in doesn’t get cold” they basically do everything other than point a big flashing arrow over and ice element that says “use me”. The only real challenge in this game is getting all gold frames or getting the best ranking at the end of the game, and even that isn’t too bad. It is a very basic control scheme, but that doesn’t make it bad and there is some fun to be had struggling to keep a ghost in your vacuum as it randomly darts around the room. The animations are charming, the game has lots of atmosphere, it achieves what it clearly sets out to do and, in that respect, it's superior to Super Mario Sunshine and The Wind Waker to me. Luigi will walk around the mansion, slowly humming or whistling the song of the game to himself as he walks from place to place. Luigi’s Mansion 3 is so much fun, so charming, and so smartly designed that, moving forward, I really hope we get more than three of these games every 20 years. I know the Mario brothers are old, but nothing quite hammered home just how old they were by showing me they were victims of a postal scam. He tells you a several pieces of bad news. Luigi steps out from the shadow of his brother Mario and into the gloomy shadows of a very haunted house in this, his first-ever starring role. Unlit candlestick? It feels like this game was made with love, and while the gameplay falters at times it still is overall an enjoyable package because of all these little things they put into it to make it feel polished. When you are, you can interact with the object by touching it or vacuuming it and if you’re right a Boo will pop up and taunt you like a big ol’ jerk. It featured Luigi. I really don't see what's so cool about some guy in green tights with a vacuum strapped to his back. Luigi’s Mansion 3 Review Luigi returns for a third spooky outing in a game that’s a playground of fun and charm Adam Speight Contact via Twitter | October 28, 2019 2:00 pm GMT Please enter your birth date to watch this video: You are not allowed to view this material at this time. Luigi’s Mansion really is just a good example of good design even if it might be a bad example of good execution of that design. The bosses are cool and the new characters are great and are very interesting. Buy Luigi's Mansion by Nintendo for Game Cube at GameStop. The device to capture ghosts is the infamous Poltergeist 3000, which E. Gadd had apparently been using to catch the spirits all those years before. I remember when the game was first released. Most of the time you just need to go to the next room, so your destination will only be a couple of steps away. It reminds me a lot of Luigi himself, actually, as they use binoculars to peer over at “average” difficulty before running screaming in the other direction. I’m not saying it isn’t worth your time, but it isn’t the sort of game that is worth digging out your old GameCube and hooking it back up for. Others are a bit more complicated, and one little girl near the end won’t be ready to fight until you soak her bed with water. After winning a mansion, it becomes Luigi's job to save Mario from a house full mean, nasty spirits being lead by the Boo's. It isn’t really fun like the normal ghosts and the reward for catching them all is just some cash so if you aren’t going for the highest score there is absolutely no reason to waste your time doing all of this. Like I mentioned before, it is a bit like fishing but here the fish are ghosts and you’re not just doing it to get away from your family and take a nap in a boat. The key is to explore all 4 sections of the vast mansion, while looking for clues on Mario's whereabouts. There is just no reason for dividing up enemies like this other than to pad out the short runtime, and it isn’t fun to just walk back and forth for big chunks of time. I highly recommend this game. On the one hand this is a weird title to talk about exploration in because it is a supremely limited and linear game. It didn’t even feature Samus or Kirby or Donkey Kong or Fox McCloud or Wario or one of the thousands of Pokemon they have laying around their offices. The first here is that almost all of the puzzles are absolutely brainless. I was a kid back then, and dumb. The sad news is while it is interesting and unique and quirky, playing it back now roughly two decades later, you can see why the Gamecube was doomed to get off to a rough start. It's essentially Luigi being a 'Ghostbuster' in an old Resident Evil-type mansion, all in a cartoon style. It was called Luigi’s Mansion and it featured Luigi fighting ghosts in a dark and spooky mansion. Luigi arrives at the location (which is conveniently in the perfect horror setting) and finds the creepy house staring at him in the face. Luigi's Mansion artistic direction helps make the game great: Always spooky and silly, occasionally bizarre, but never scary enough to permanently scar kids. The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, Really charming game that is oozing personality all the way through, Interesting core gameplay and catching the portrait ghosts can be a decent amount of fun, Trying to get all gold frames or the maximum score does at least allow for some challenge, Exploring the house is nice, even if there could be more to explore, Painfully short, and the game can wrap up pretty easily in 5 hours or so, Incredibly easy (if you aren’t going for all gold frames) and there is almost no challenge here until you hit the final boss, For such a small mansion, there is an annoying amount of backtracking or moving to the other side of the mansion to get to the next room, Elemental ghosts wind up being more annoying than anything and really just force you to backtrack to the element you need, Boos are more of a hassle to get than anything and just involve following them from room to room, Puzzles to get portrait ghosts to show their hearts are way too basic and uninteresting, Fighting ghosts is essentially the same for every ghost and beyond the bosses all the fights play out essentially the same, Mansion feels cramped, and there are only a couple of hidden extras to find, Rooms are small with only a couple of things to interact with, meaning you will typically accidentally solve puzzles even if you are confused. The graphics are top-notch, the sound is catchy and simply lovable, the controls are delightful and the gameplay is original and just so much fun. First Mario goes to scope it out, and he immediately gets trapped by King Boo. Throughout the game, you’ll unlock three different medals and it’ll allow Luigi to use fire, ice, and water blasts from his vacuum. Even portrait ghosts, while interesting thematically, are complete pushovers. I finally figured out that they’re always compulsively collecting coins all these years and it’s because their bank account got compromised when they sent that nice man on the phone their social security number for a free magazine subscription. This is an absolutely charming game, brimming with this clever design and fun presentation even if the gameplay itself is a bit of a mess. This is used to battle a handful of minor environmental ghosts or solve certain puzzles. It is something they have adhered to for essentially every console they’ve released since the start of their run as a gaming juggernaut. For example, some ghosts will have the fire element on them and they can only be damaged by water while some rooms will have unlit candlesticks and if you set them on fire you will unlock a chest or a ghost or something to fight. Playing this back now, it is much easier to see some pretty glaring flaws. October 25, 2012 November 3, 2019 ragglefragglereviews 3 Comments. It manages to power its way through on the strength of its core gameplay and its charm alone, which is impressive in and of itself. The Boos aren’t particularly fun to hunt because they are more of a chore than anything else, and rather than actually fight them you sort of have to just follow them around. After clearing a room, you will be able to try and find a Boo. Solid Snake debuts on the GameCube in Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. More interesting are the portrait ghosts. The dark portions of the Mansion bring on a very grumpy tune that I'm sure everyone remembers and it's unsettling, but charming to see Luigi hum it along to keep himself calm.
